Machine building: from BOM to machine shipment

From orders and multi-level manufacturing BOMs the system releases work orders for the machine and its sub-assemblies, from parts to assembly.

Etrust PIS is software for machine building, developed in machine production at Tehnos. It manages multi-level BOMs with versions, production release from the order, subcontracting and the paint shop, and post-calculation of every machine. The daily order schedule and operation scheduling within the shifts of the work calendar show when the machine will be finished and which workstation is holding it up.

Typical flow

How work flows in machine building

  1. BOMs
  2. Order
  3. Pre-calculation
  4. Release
  5. Parts production
  6. Subcontracting
  7. Painting
  8. Assembly
  9. Shipping
  10. Post-calculation
  11. Invoice

Challenges

Challenges you know

  • Only assembly reveals the differences between the engineering and manufacturing BOM
  • Engineering changes a part, production keeps making it to the old version
  • Every machine variant means hours of manual release and errors in work orders
  • Laser cutting and the paint shop run outside the main flow, and assembly waits
  • Costs, material and time are collected from slips after the machine has shipped

Solution

How Etrust PIS helps

  • Engineering BOM import from templates

Import a multi-level BOM from a spreadsheet with predefined columns and assign the materials to routing operations.

  • Manufacturing BOM versioning

Release uses the active version of every sub-assembly, and you move work orders not yet started to it with a mass update.

  • One manufacturing BOM for all colours

Prepare the manufacturing BOM for the raw part; the colour is set by an attribute or option on the order. Release picks the right colour and creates a painted item with the correct name.

  • Machine options on the order

Enter options as additional equipment on the machine order, and release adds them to the assembly work order at the installation operation.

  • Control center and subcontracting

Start & Stop records time, good parts, scrap and consumption, and you prepare the subcontractor order from the work order operations.

  • Machine serial numbers

The serial number links the machine to its work order and order, and a built machine with the same equipment can be reassigned to another order.

  • Painting plan and hangers

The painting plan collects parts for painting from the assembly work order or BOM. Raw parts from stock are painted in the colour from the order, and each package on a hanger in one colour.
